The Impact of Log Transportation in Oregon Forests

OVERVIEW:   The Douglas County Museum has contracted with your class to develop an interpretive display to show the impact of logging transportation methods over time on the environment.  In groups students will gather and analyze information to create a pictorial time line and computer presentation for the museum. 

 

GEOGRAPHIC QUESTION(s):  How have methods of log transportation changed over time and what caused these changes (technology, environmental pressure, or a combination of factors)?

 

NATIONAL STANDARDS: 

#1:    How to use maps and other geographic representations.

#14:  How human actions modify the physical environment.

#17:  How to apply geography to interpret the past.

 

CONNECTIONS WITH OREGON CURRICULUM (Grade 10 benchmarks):

 

GRADE LEVELS:  Planned for 11-12th grades.  It can be modified for 7-10th grades.

 

OBJECTIVES:  The students will:

 

MATERIALS:   Video (Bushwackers, Catskinners and other Timberbeasts), butcher paper, writing material and Internet access.

 

MATERIALS:  (Extensions)

A class trip to Oregon forest sites with examples of past and present logging practices, speakers representing different aspects of log transport, library resource books, and internet access.
