Dirt Alert

Overview:
The purpose of this lesson is to visually illustrate the negative effects on the environment of dumping toxic wastes into the soil by constructing a soil simulator.

Materials:
- Aluminum baking pans or trays
- Modeling clay
- Florists' Styrofoam
- Sand and green Kool-Aid mixed together (sand A), sand (sand B)
- Water
- "Dirt Alert" scavenger hunt board and vocabulary pieces
Procedure:
Students should have a prior understanding of past history of mankind and the use or abuse of natural resources, lessons on soil components, lessons on water, runoff and erosion. Introduce the geography theme of human-environmental interaction.
Evaluation:
Students share data and tell what they learned in the lesson. Bonus for students who can define one of the vocabulary words.
