CENTRAL OREGON ROAD TRIP

OVERVIEW:

Students will plan a 6-day road trip of Central Oregon in which they will list attractions and complete a road map showing these sites.

CONNECTION:

Geography, language arts, map skills.

TEACHING LEVEL: 6-8.

STATE STANDARDS:

Benchmark #3 Read, interpret and make maps, charts, and graphs to explain spatial relationships.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY STANDARD: #1, 3

MATERIALS:

Road map of Central Oregon
Brochures of scenic places of interest
Paper to draw maps and list places
Colored pens/pencils.

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Where is Central Oregon?
  2. Look at your road map and see if there are any names that you recognize from this area.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Ask the class the Introduction questions.
  2. Have the class find any name that is mentioned and point to it on the map.
  3. Show the class a model of the 6 scenic attractions as an example.
  4. Instruct students to compile a list of their own using the travel brochures, the map and their own experiences.
  5. Have them list the places in the order in which they will visit these sites. Have them list any information about the place that was provided in the brochures.
  6. Show the created road map.
  7. Have the students create their own map of their chosen sites.
  8. Have the students share their list of places and display their maps.
  9. Create a bulletin board that lists the places and maps together.
