Application

Students are only admitted to begin the Graduate Program for Fall term once a year.  The application deadline is April 1, but priority consideration is given to applications in by February 15. For admission to graduate study, a student normally should have completed an undergraduate degree in geography with an overall 3.0 grade average.  Students with an undergraduate degree other than geography are encouraged to apply as well, and may be admitted with the stipulation that they take up to four specified undergraduate-level classes to remedy the deficiencies in their geography backgrounds.

Details of the program and the application process are available in a 12-page PDF Information Booklet.  After downloading and reading this document you may have more specific questions.  Please contact either Professor Joe Poracsky, Graduate Admissions Committee Chair (503-725-3158, poracskyj@pdx.edu) or Karin Waller, Geography Department Office Manager (503-725-3916, i5kw@pdx.edu).  We are always happy to talk with potential students.

It is important for students to understand that they are not just admitted to the program, but are admitted to work with a particular faculty member willing to advise them.  Both the Information Booklet and this Geography Department web site include listings of faculty and their research and teaching interests.  Prospective graduate students are strongly urged to determine the faculty member(s) whose interests match their own.  Faculty are much more inclined to accept a student if they have had some personal contact prior to their application.
